In Social Studies we have begun our unit on the Wampanaogs, a Native American tribe in Massachusetts. We are learning about their life before the Europeans came over and started settling in the region. Ask the kids about some of the information we have learned so far. The clothes Wampanaog boys wore caused quite the stir in class today. :)

We launched our second unit in Math with this awesome activity. Playing "Skee Ball" the kids had to find different ways to reach a score of 450. (Using points worth 100, 50, 40, 30, 20, or 10) They had nine balls to achieve this goal. It was awesome to see them working together to try and find as many ways as possible to do this. It wasn't easy. But they did a great job of growing their math brains!!! Check out a sample poster below:
We are continuing to revise our personal narratives in writer's workshop. It's amazing to see such incredible writing from the writers in Room 7. We have grown a great deal since the start of the year. Our writers are excited to share their stories every writer's workshop. And we have been inspired by each other. It's great to see our writers using strategies that other writers have used in their writing. Ask your writer what they are working on in class. I think you'll be as impressed as I am.
It was wonderful to meet so many of you last night. I always enjoy meeting new families and reconnecting with families that have been with me before. As I said, it takes both of us to make the year as rewarding and meaningful as it can be. I really believe that this year is going to be awesome, and I think we will be doing some amazing things as the year goes on. Remember to e-mail me if you have any questions. Or if you just want to say Hi. Thanks again for coming.
We've been really building our reading life this year. Currently we are focusing on checking our comprehension as we read. As you can see on the anchor chart below there are three areas we are focusing on to check our comprehension. I encourage you to use this language at home with the books we're reading. It's a great way to not only check in on our comprehension but to also start a book talk that will hopefully lead to a wonderful conversation.
Our writer's workshop has gotten off to an amazing start this year. I have been super duper impressed with every one of our amazing writers in Room 7. Our first unit is crafting true stories. Our writers have been thinking about small moments in their lives and writing the whole story. Not only have they thought deeply about these moments but once they have a moment they start writing in their notebooks. They have been writing long and strong every workshop period. Also, our writers have been very excited to share their awesome writing. We love to share our writing with the class to show what great writing we are doing on a daily basis.
We read The Rainbow Fish in class. It is one of my favorite stories. We had an awesome discussion afterwards about the overall message of the story–how it is better to share with others. The rainbow fish lost friends because he wouldn't share his beautiful glittering scales, but once he realized how happy it made the other fish when he started sharing his scales with them he became truly happy inside. As a close activity we made our own "scales" that we wanted to share. Our "scales" represent something that is special about us. Our rainbow fish is hanging on the bulletin board outside our room. Come by and have a look!
Today We had such a fantastic first day today! I can't tell you how pleased I was with every member of our classroom community. I handed out many Bridge Patriot Stickers. In a later post I will go into more detail about Bridge Patriot Stickers and how it is used in the classroom. Today we worked on our "Read All About Me" posters. Below is an example of one of the posters. We had such fun working on them! It's always fun to engage in "getting to know you" activities at the start of the school year. It's one of the ways we begin the bonding process that will allow us to grow not only as learners but as people during the year.
I can already tell that we will grow a great deal this year. I am excited and hope that when we got home we shared with you some of the same excitement we experienced in class. |
